christmas? pass.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable christmas. Mine was ok I guess. As I mentioned before, I don't really get all that excited about holidays anymore. When you're a kid, it's all about getting presents. For me, it was all about nintendo games and action figures. Now that I'm older, the stuff I want is way too expensive for anyone to buy, so I never get what I want. And it's not so much that I only care about getting presents. I could buy most of the stuff I want. I guess I just don't see what all the hoopla is about. Sure christmas is all about family and whatnot, but I live at home. I see my family every day. Christmas is no different than the other 364 days of the year except that we get presents.

I guess the main thing that annoys me about xmas is that every year my grandparents have to do their ritual xmas sermon. They're hardcore fanatical christians, and to them pretty much everything is evil. (When I was little, they wouldn't let me get ninja turtles because they're 'monsters.' Once I asked them for a Gamepro magazine but they refused because it had a ninja on the cover. I have countless stories like that.) Anyway, let me describe a typical xmas with my family. Usually we go to my grandparents' house with my aunt and cousins to eat. This year they all came here. After a little time is spent chatting it up and preparing the food, we all gather round the 'table of the lord' to pray. I can deal with that, but there's more to it. Every year my grandpa decides to preach about the true meaning of christmas and how santa is really just satan with the letters rearranged, and blah blah blah. Most of us just tune it out and let him finish so we can eat. This is usually followed by him and my grandma singing and dancing about jesus. It's quite an embarrassing sight. Once he's done, he breaks out the dreaded 'medicine bottle.' It looks like a bottle of prescription drugs, but in it are small strips of paper with brief bible quotes. He calls it medicine for the soul. He passes one out to everyone and we stand around the table and have to read it aloud. This year he changed it up and we had to say the basic point it was trying to convey. Whatever. This is usually followed by more praying, then we can finally eat. My grandparents mean well, they just go about it all wrong. This year after everyone left we went to midnight mass at church, which is weird since we haven't done that since I was a little kid. Once we got home at around 1:15am, we all opened presents (something else we've never done before. We've always opened gifts christmas morning).

Anyway, the older I get, the less I buy into the whole religion thing, but I don't dare so much as hint at such a thing to my parents. I can't even begin to imagine the fallout that would occur as a result. The truth is though, that I believe in science more than I believe in religion (though the big bang theory is a little iffy). However a part of me is afraid to reject my faith, probably as a result of my strong catholic upbringing. I have no problem with, and respect, peoples' religious beliefs, but when they try to force feed their beliefs on others, that's when I take issue. Buuuuuut, I don't want this to become a religion post, so I'll stop there. ;)

As for the gifts, I think this was the most disappointing xmas yet. I guess it's my fault for not asking for anything at all, since I can buy most everything I want. However, I wasn't really expecting to get clothes. (-_-)... Money would have sufficed. Ah well, live and learn. I understand why my parents got me clothes though, since I absolutely hate shopping, and avoid it like the plague. I did get a cool Far Side calendar though, so it wasn't a total wash.

I think next year I'll just celebrate Festivus instead. Feats of Strength anyone?

cheap fun

Paper Mario!

I got really bored yesterday and this is what happened. I got the printout for the model from this site. It has several and they look pretty cool. For time reasons I decided to try and make one of the easier ones, but it still took me several hours. I might try and make more later or attempt one of the harder ones. Good fun.

Christmas is just 2 days away, woohoo! I hope your holidays aren't as boring as mine. :)

what's taters?

Monday I went in to work to have a "discussion" with my managers about the Team Leader position I mentioned in my last entry. I had a few reservations about the position mostly because it sounded more like an operations type job, which to me isn't fun at all. I mentioned this to my managers at the meeting and even though there are operational responsibilities, they don't necessarily have to be done by me. Basically I would oversee the rest of the Customer Service team and make sure that things get done. As the overseer, I can assign the other staff tasks in order to ensure that things run smoothly. So, it's kind of like a supervisory position. The only downfall is that I probably won't get paid more and I have to attend more meetings than the regular staff, but it's all good I guess. It should make for nice padding on my resume. The funny thing is that I've only been working there for a little over one semester and already I'm climbing the ranks, while there are other people who have been there for years and haven't advanced at all. Whatever.

Since I've got so much time on my hands now, I'm trying to watch a lot of movies to pass the time. Props to Melvin for letting me borrow Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers SE dvd and the Gorgeous dvd. I hadn't seen Two Towers until 2 days ago, but I must say it was pretty sweet. It got me excited about the last LotR movie, although I probably won't see it until it comes out on dvd. I haven't watched Gorgeous yet, but from what I hear it's pretty bad. :/ I still plan on watching it anyway. I still have several japanese movies to watch, all of which I've had for months now. Maybe I'll finally get around to watching those too. Who knows. One thing is for sure though, I have plenty to keep me busy. Unfortunately I never feel like doing any of it.

I'm still open to ideas for ways to use up my monthly hosting bandwidth. If you've got an idea, leave a message on the forums. (See previous post for more details.) Keep in mind there are restricitons, but the bottom line is that it keeps me (and maybe others) entertained.

Speaking of being entertained, Shawn showed me this cool video of these japanese robots dancing. They aren't seizure robots, but pretty neat anyway. Check it out.

done and done

Well, thursday was my last final, thus concluding the semester for me. Not only that, yesterday was my last work day aside from cleaning day on wednesday morning. So basically I'm a free man for the next few weeks until the spring semester begins, woohoo! Thursday morning I had my end-of-semester performance review at work. It went rather well. Basically our manager goes over our self-evaluation that we filled out and comments on it, then goes over this chart covering your various abilities and how well you did them. All of mine were ranked Very Good with the exception of two or three Satisfactory marks and one Excellent for 'Quality of Work.' That was pretty cool. After going over that stuff, he talked a little about the team leader position they're hiring for for the coming semester. It sounds like he wants me to apply since really I'm the only customer service person who really knows how everything works on our team. I don't know if I am going to apply mainly because as a team leader I won't get to do as many projects. It's more of a supervisory position, and while that is looks nice on a resume and whatnot, it doesn't seem like too fun a job, even with a pay increase. So I'm kinda torn at the moment, but I need to make a decision by monday because that's when they start interviewing for the positions. Not sure what I'll do.

Now that work and school are over, I have loads of free time. I thought that would be a wonderful thing, but I've been sitting here all day trying to find something to do to fight off extreme boredom. Nothing has worked so far aside from posting this blargg entry. As it turns out, work and school did a rather nice job of keeping me occupied and thus sane. Now I'm going nuts. I really need to get out more. I suppose I should finish off some projects I've had on the backburner for a while. I know for sure I'll be working on Harry's site, but other than that I really don't feel like doing anything.

With that said, I get a lot of monthly bandwidth with my hosting package, so if anyone wants space for a website/project/blog/whatever or has any suggestions for ways to utilize my space, pitch me your idea. There are a few restrictions though since I have to abide by my host's AUP, but the main thing is that it's something that'll get used/updated frequently. Be creative.

in space no one can hear you scream

Wow, what a relaxing weekend. Friday night I slept 13 hours, last night I slept about 10. It feels good to be done with classes, and even though I still have 4 finals this week, I really don't care at this point. I just feel so good to be done. I still have to work this week and next week, but work is fun so it's all good.

I did get an exchange for my defective copy of Alien Quadrilogy. No hassles, I just showed it to them and they let me go and get another off the shelf. Pain free. This time I shook the box and made sure there were no loose dvds inside, and when I got home I carefully inspected each disc for possible problems. Everything seems to be in proper condition, and I haven't experienced any problems so far. The box opens huge since it has to hold 9 discs. They all unfold horizontally to a length somewhere between 5 and 6 feet. It's all a bit unwieldy but cool just the same.

I spent the day yesterday watching all four Alien movies trying to decide my rankings for the series. I haven't quite come to a decision yet, but I can tell you this much: I love those movies. This box set should keep me busy for a good while :) Right now I'm watching all the movies with the commentary. I'm watching the first one right now, it's almost done. I won't have time for the rest until later in the week though thanks to work and finals. Nevertheless, it's good stuff. :D

Christmas is just around the corner. I wish I could get as excited about it as I used to when I was a kid, but I guess that's part of growing up. I don't know what I'll be receiving for christmas, but it'll most likely be money and/or dvds. Or maybe I'll finally get that flamethrower I've been asking for every year since I was little. Who knows!
