hooray for vacation!

In 7 hours I will be on a plane headed for Chicago, where I will broard another plane which will then be headed for New York. I don't really know what to expect other than for it to be a new experience. One thing I'm not looking forward to is waking up at 4am to catch our 6:45 flight. I'm also not looking forward to the 5 hour flight, or the hour and a half ride to the hotel from the airport. Good thing I have lots of CDs to keep me occupied. That, and a new camera. :) At any rate, rest assured I will post a full writeup of the trip, complete with lots of pictures. This trip was nearly cancelled due to my grandma becoming very ill and having an angioplasty today. She seems to be fine now, so the trip is back on. By this time tomorrow I'll be in NY doing my best Seinfeld impression.

"What's the deal with the black box? If it's the only thing that survives a plane crash, why don't they make the whole plane out of it?"

Be back Sunday! :D

begin countdown

By this time next week, I will be in New York on vacation! Just 7 days away.... I can't wait! :D

another missed opportunity

Planet of the Drums was here tonight at Paradox and I missed it. One of these years I'll make it out to see (hear) it.

/me is bummed

it's just money right?

For a while there I actually forgot I had a blog and even a website. I've been keeping myself pretty busy lately, so much that things like blargg don't seem all that important anymore. But alas, I will keep it up to entertain the few regular readers I have out there.

So much has happened since last post (as usual) that I can't remember most of it (as usual). Let's see... One of the biggest things to happen recently was I got my braces off finally, woohoo! It felt weird for a while to not have braces anymore, after having worn them for the past 2 years, but it's such a relief to finally have them off. They did leave my teeth a little stained, which I hope will be fixed at my next dentist appointment. At my last appointment the orthodontists gave me a big bucket of candy in celebration of getting by braces off. It was pretty funny since it was loaded with all the candy you're not supposed to eat when you have braces. I thought that was pretty nice of them, although I rarely eat candy. I also got my retainer which I have to wear all the time, but never do. It's kinda cool because it has a UT logo on it, since my orthodontist is a UT grad and bleeds orange. Check it out:

Around that time, Onyee came to Austin to visit. We all hung out, played some mahjong, played some mini golf, and watched Saw, which was pretty good up until the lame ending.

One of those weekends I finally got around to seeing Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. I have to say it was pretty good, considering the other two prequels. I especially enjoyed the scene where Darth Vader puts his helmet on for the first time. I think I almost teared up. I could have done without the cheesy lines though. I also wished they had shown more of Luke and Leia after they were born. Kind of a sucky ending. However, what made it most awesome was the fact that I saw it for free thanks to Eddie. There's something really cool about just walking into a theater and sitting down to see a movie. Afterward we had a nice $70 dinner at Korea House, then hung out at Eddie's new place watching Jackass and CKY videos. Good times.

Also around that time I (actually a coworker and I) were put in charge of setting up a Windows server at work, something which neither of us had done before or had any knowledge of. It was rough at first, especially having never even seen Windows Server 2003. After tinkering with it for a week or two, we finally got it down and successfully deployed Windows Server 2003, Exchange 2003, Visual Source Safe, and a whole slough of other crazy software packages on our server, which we are now happily using at work. It was a fun, and at times, frustrating, experience; one I'd happily do again.

That weekend I finally got around to buying a cd/dvd rack for all my cds and dvds. I knew I had a lot but I didn't realize just how much I had until after I put the shelves together and put in all my cds/dvds. Once it was all said and done, I only have room for one more cd and a few more dvds, which kinda sucks since the shelves cost me $50 and I already need a new one, especially after recently adding the Chappelle's Show Season 2 DVD (which is great btw), and the Reno 911 Season 2 dvd (also great) and a DJ Shadow special edition cd (which isn't so great).

And now it's time for a random movie review! I rented Onmyoji from Blockbuster a couple weeks ago, a Japanese movie set in the Heian era and centers around an onmyoji (these sorcerer guardians who protect the kingdom) who is suspected of cursing the emperor Mikado and his baby son. I don't remember much else than that because the movie was quite boring and failed to impress me in any regard. Part of the problem was the fact that Eriko Imai, a jpop idol, was a character in the movie, and didn't really seem to fit in. That, along with cheesy acting and lame special effects made for a forgetable movie that I don't recommend seeing. I'd like to see Onmyoji II though, as my future wife, Kyoko Fukada, is in it. :D

My TFC clan, IODINE, won the UGC 5v5 Steel title this past Wednesday night. After a couple of intense, one point wins, our title match turned out to be pretty easy once the other team sort of fell apart and played really lame. We had fun though, and I'm glad to be a part of such a fun group.

This weekend was probably the most fun weekend I've had in a long time. Friday I took off work early because Ting was gonna be in town that afternoon. After I left work I went over to Best Buy to kill time until she called. I ended up buying a Canon PowerShot Digital Elph SD500. It's pretty sweet but didn't come cheap.

7.1 megapixels of awesome

It put a nice $600 dent in my wallet. The reason I got it is because next Thursday I am going to New York for a 4 day vacation and I need a small camera that'll fit in my pocket, something my old camera will never be able to do. The camera is great but I've barely used it since I got it. 7.1 megapixels are nice to have though. ;) After all that splurging, Ting still hadn't called so I came home to nap since I had a nice headache by that time. I slept until like 8pm and still no call from Ting so I went to hang out with Minh, Cassie, & Kenneth, and we ended up going to see Mr. & Mrs. Smith with Candace & Mack. I knew nothing about the movie other than the fact that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie starred in it, but I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the movie and would like to see it again. Lots of action and (cheesy at times) comedy. Good stuff! The best way to see a movie is to go in with no expectations, that's for sure.

Saturday afternoon I went over to Minh/Cassie/Kenneth's for a bbq. Aside from the intense heat, it was fun. We ate, played a little basketball, ate some more, I ate a propane fume soaked burger which made me sick for the rest of the day, watched Hitch, which made me want to kill myself by the end due to its extreme corniness, then played mahjong until the wee hours of the morning.

Sunday I was awoken by a phone call from Ting inviting me to go to Barton Springs with her and her friends. Being that she was leaving back to NY later that day, I figured I might as well go, even though I really didn't want to, given how incredibly hot it was outside. So I went and the 9 of us all rented canoes to go paddling down Town Lake. They all brough water guns, I was the only one without one, so once the Battle at Town Lake began, I was grossly unprepared an unarmed. We all got soaked, which was the pefect way to fight the heat. All in all I had a great time aside from slicing my finger open pretty deep with a piece of wire that was hanging off our canoe. We didn't get to spend much time there because Ting had to leave get ready for her flight back home. Afteward I headed over to Minh/Cassie/Kenneth's for more mahjong, then back home for Father's Day with my dad and grandpa. This weekend has left me exhausted and several shades darker than usual, but it was a blast. Now I'm just counting down the days until next Thursday. Even though I doubt I'll like the whole NY atmosphere, I'm very excited to go. Except a plethora of pics upon my return. :)
